Finish Carpentry & Trim in Carleton Place and Ottawa

Custom classic fireplace mantel in Perth

Finish carpentry is the work people notice without knowing why: tight mitres, straight lines and trim that sits flat against the wall. It's the core of what we do. Owner Jonas Zanini spent 20 years in IT before turning to carpentry, and he brings the same attention to detail to every casing, baseboard and mantel. Zanini Renovations has been a fully insured carpentry business in Carleton Place since 2020. More about Jonas.

What we install

Baseboards, casings and shoe moulding. New trim after flooring or drywall work, or a full replacement to update a room. After a Carleton Place basement flood, we installed custom-fit trim around every doorway along with new baseboards and shoe moulding.

Crown moulding. Crown along a ceiling line or across the top of a built-in, such as the shelving wall we built in a Kanata living room.

Wainscoting, panelling and accent walls. Panelled or board-and-batten walls, picture-frame moulding and feature walls that give a plain room some character.

Fireplace mantels and surrounds. From a simple floating shelf to a full traditional mantel. In Perth we designed and built a multi-layered mantel with decorative corbels, an arched header and dentil crown moulding, built on site in the client's garage. It has a large-format tile surround and a raised step hearth.

Interior and closet doors. Hanging interior doors, bifolds and sliding barn doors, and trimming them out. In one basement we hung two pairs of six-panel bifold doors across a wide storage wall, set out with a laser level so the whole run lines up.

Custom exterior doors and openings. Larger jobs such as framing a new 8 foot opening with a header for a set of custom double doors on a rural West Carleton outbuilding.

The details that matter

Old houses aren't square, and new ones aren't always either. Good trim work means scribing to walls and floors that aren't flat, coping inside corners so they stay tight through the seasons, and keeping reveals consistent around every door. We check level and plumb with a laser rather than trusting the walls, and we fill and caulk so everything is ready for paint.

Fireplace surrounds

A fireplace wall is usually the focal point of a room, and it combines several trades: framing or a drywall bump-out, tile, a mantel, trim and paint. In a Carleton Place living room we built out a drywall surround with a recessed niche, a wood sill and baseboard wrapped all the way around, below a floating mantel shelf. On a Kanata fireplace we prepped and primed the existing wood and metal and replaced the grout to refresh the whole surround.

Fireplaces have required clearances between the firebox and combustible materials like wood trim, so the design starts with those and the appliance manufacturer's instructions. Any wiring for outlets in a niche or a wall-mounted TV is done by qualified, certified electricians, whom we arrange as part of the project. Gas work, such as connecting a gas fireplace, isn't included.

Residential and commercial

Most of our trim work is in homes, but we also do finish carpentry in condos and commercial spaces: offices, shops and rental units. We've built a custom office desk at a client's workplace (see custom built-ins), and our most recent kitchen was a condo project too (see kitchen remodels).

How a trim job works

You send photos and tell us what you'd like. We visit to measure and look at the walls, floors and existing trim. Then you get a written estimate in Canadian dollars, labour-only or with materials, along with a schedule. Once the trim is chosen, we install, fill and caulk so it's ready for paint, and clean up. We'll agree on painting or staining as part of the quote. Workmanship is covered by our one-year limited warranty.

Finish carpentry FAQ

Can you match existing trim in an older home?

Often, yes. Many standard profiles are still available, and we'll look at the closest match for your home. Bring us a short offcut, or we'll take a photo and measurements at the visit.

Do you paint or finish the trim after installing it?

We install, fill and caulk so the trim is ready for paint. We'll agree on painting or staining as part of the quote.

What's the difference between wainscoting and an accent wall?

Wainscoting usually covers the lower part of a wall with panels or boards and a cap rail. An accent wall is a feature treatment, such as board and batten, picture-frame moulding or slats, that can run floor to ceiling on one wall.

Can you build a custom fireplace mantel or surround?

Yes. We've built everything from a drywall surround with a recessed niche to a full traditional mantel with corbels and dentil crown, and we build to the required clearances from the firebox.

Do you take on small trim jobs?

Send us photos and a short description, whether it's one room of baseboard or a few doors, and we'll let you know how we can help.
