Tile shows every decision. A crooked first row, a sliver cut at the end of a wall or a grout line that wanders gets noticed every time you walk into the room. We plan tile the way we plan trim: layout first, so the pattern is centred where people look and the cuts fall where they won't. Zanini Renovations has been a fully insured carpentry and renovation business in Carleton Place since 2020.

Kitchen backsplashes. A backsplash is a small area with a lot of cuts: outlets, window returns, the ends of the upper cabinets and the edge of the countertop. In a Kanata kitchen we installed a honeycomb backsplash of white hexagon tiles with marble-like veining (see our Backsplash installation in Kanata), with precise cuts around every outlet and corner and consistent grout lines so the pattern reads cleanly against the existing cabinets and dark countertops.
Tile floors. Tile is one of the floors we install, along with hardwood, engineered wood, vinyl and laminate (see flooring installation). It suits entries, mudrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens, and it's a common choice in basements because it handles moisture and temperature changes well. A tile floor is only as flat as what's under it, so we check the subfloor and deal with any dips or movement before the first tile goes down.
Showers and bathroom walls. Shower walls and tub surrounds need a proper waterproofing system behind the tile, not just tile and grout. We'll go over the approach for your bathroom at the visit. Any plumbing, such as moving a valve or drain, is done by qualified, certified plumbers, whom we arrange as part of the project.
Fireplace surrounds and hearths. For a custom mantel in Perth (see our Custom Classic Fireplace Mantel in Perth), we installed a large-format tile surround and a matching raised step hearth, keeping the surfaces level and the grout lines tight. On a Kanata fireplace we replaced the old grout as part of refreshing the whole surround (see our Fireplace renovation in Kanata). Fireplace tile is planned around the required clearances and the appliance manufacturer's instructions. Gas work isn't included. More fireplace work is on our finish carpentry and accent walls pages.
Most of the work in a good tile job happens before any tile is set. We dry-lay or mark out the pattern to centre it on the focal point, such as a range, a window or a fireplace, and to avoid thin cuts at walls and cabinet ends. We check the surface for flatness and make sure the substrate suits the tile and the room. Large-format tile needs an especially flat surface, and patterns like hexagon or herringbone need extra time on layout so the lines stay true across the whole area.
Because we're carpenters first, we pay attention to the edges: the transition from tile to a hardwood hallway, the baseboard or shoe moulding along a tile floor, the trim around a tiled fireplace and the edge where a backsplash stops at a cabinet or a window. Those details are usually what make a tile job look finished.
Most of our tile work is in homes, but we also work in condos and commercial spaces. Our most recent kitchen was a condo kitchen renovation (see kitchen remodels).
You send photos and tell us what you're planning. We visit to measure and check the surface. Then you get a written estimate in Canadian dollars, labour-only or with materials, along with a schedule. Once the tile is chosen, we prep, set, grout and clean up. If a building permit is needed for the wider renovation, we can look after it as an optional extra, quoted separately, or you can handle it yourself. Workmanship is covered by our one-year limited warranty.
You deal directly with the owner, Jonas Zanini, from the estimate to the final walkthrough. We take the time on layout and cuts that tile needs, and we finish the edges with the same care as the trim. Our work in Ontario is done to the Ontario Building Code (O.Reg. 332/12). Zanini Renovations is fully insured.
