Staircase Renovations & Exterior Stairs

Finished interior staircase after a carpet-to-wood makeover

Stairs get more traffic than any other part of the house, and they're one of the first things people see when they walk in. We renovate interior staircases, often taking them from tired carpet to wood, and we build new exterior stairs and landings for decks, patios and back doors. Zanini Renovations has been a fully insured carpentry business in Carleton Place since 2020, working across Lanark County and Ottawa.

Interior stair makeovers

Carpet to wood. Pulling up old stair carpet and finishing the stairs to match a new floor is one of the most popular stair upgrades. In an Ottawa home in South Keys, we removed the carpet from the second floor and the staircase and installed new flooring throughout, finishing the stairs along with the upstairs floor. Doing both at once means the stairs and the floor they lead to are planned together, so heights, nosings and transitions line up instead of being patched in later.

New treads, risers and nosing. Where the existing treads are worn, damaged or never meant to be seen, new treads and risers give the staircase a clean, solid surface. Matching stair nosing carries the floor over the edge of each step. Depending on their condition, we'll look at whether the existing treads are worth keeping or whether new ones make more sense.

Stair trim and skirt boards. Skirt boards, returns and trim along the stringers and landing are what make a stair renovation look finished rather than patched. This is finish carpentry, and it's where we spend the most care.

Railings, handrails and balusters. If the railing needs updating too, we'll talk through the options at the estimate so it suits the rest of the staircase.

Storage under the stairs. The space under a staircase is often wasted. We can build doors, cabinets or shelving into it. See custom built-ins.

Exterior stairs and landings

Outdoor stairs have to deal with rain, snow, ice and frost every year, so they're built differently from interior ones. We build pressure-treated stairs with cut stringers and handrails, set on proper footings or a level base. In Carleton Place we built new stairs from a patio up to the house with secure handrails. At another Carleton Place home we built a landing on posts with metal post bases over concrete footings, with stairs down to a pad of patio slabs and railings on both sides.

Outdoor stairs need consistent, comfortable steps and solid handrails and guards, so we lay them out carefully for the height and space you have. Whether a set of exterior stairs or a landing needs a permit depends on the project and the municipality. We can help with the permit application as an optional add-on, quoted separately, or you're welcome to handle the permit yourself. Our work in Ontario is done to the Ontario Building Code (O.Reg. 332/12). For bigger outdoor projects, see our deck building page.

How a stair project works

  1. Visit and measure. We look at the existing stair: its structure, how the treads are attached, and how it meets the floors above and below.
  2. Written estimate in Canadian dollars, labour-only or with materials, including what happens to carpet, trim and railings.
  3. The work. Removal, prep, new treads, risers and nosing, trim, and railings where included.
  4. Cleanup.

We'll plan how you'll get up and down during the work before it starts, and you'll get a schedule with your quote. Workmanship is covered by our one-year limited warranty.

Why hire a finish carpenter for stairs

A staircase combines structure, flooring and trim, and the trim is what decides how it looks. We handle all three, so the treads, nosing and skirt boards are planned and fitted together. You deal directly with the owner, Jonas Zanini, from the estimate to the final walkthrough. Zanini Renovations is fully insured.

We also take on stair repairs and exterior stairs for commercial and multi-unit properties, along with most of the other carpentry and renovation work we do, in condos and commercial spaces.

Where we work on stairs

We build and renovate stairs in Carleton Place, Beckwith, Franktown, Almonte, Pakenham, Perth, Smiths Falls and Arnprior, and across Ottawa, including South Keys, Kanata, Stittsville, Barrhaven, Nepean, Riverside South, Manotick, Richmond, Carp and Ashton. Gatineau stair projects are welcome too.

Staircase FAQ

Can you replace carpeted stairs with hardwood treads?

Yes. We remove the carpet and finish the stairs with new treads, risers and nosing chosen to match your floors.

Do you refinish existing treads or replace them?

It depends on their condition. Sometimes the existing treads are worth keeping, and sometimes new treads are the better choice. We'll look at them together at the estimate.

Can I use the stairs during the work?

We'll plan access before the work starts, so you know how you'll get up and down. Your schedule comes with the quote.

Can you build new exterior stairs or a landing for my deck or porch?

Yes. We build pressure-treated exterior stairs and landings with handrails or railings, on footings or a level base, for decks, patios and back doors.

Do you install railings and handrails?

On exterior stairs, yes: handrails and railings with balusters are part of the build. For interior stairs, we'll go over railing options at the estimate.
