Custom Built-ins, Shelving & Closets

Built-in shelving wall in Kanata

Flat-pack furniture is built to fit an average room. A built-in is built to fit yours: the alcove beside the fireplace, the space under the stairs, the corner nothing else will fit. We design and build custom shelving, window seats, closets, vanities and storage walls on site, measured to the wall and scribed to the floor. Zanini Renovations has been a fully insured carpentry business in Carleton Place since 2020.

What we build

Built-in shelving and cabinet walls. Open shelves, closed cabinets below and crown moulding across the top, finished to match the room. In a Kanata living room we built a full-wall unit with open shelving on both sides, an open centre above the cabinets and panelled lower doors. It ties in with the white mantel on the next wall.

Window seats with storage. A window seat turns a deep window or alcove into seating and storage. In Barrhaven we built a window bench with three deep drawers and recessed panels that fits the alcove wall to wall.

Closets and closet doors. Closet shelving, corner shelving with a built-in desk, and doors to close off storage. Options include bifold doors, sliding barn doors and double doors. In one basement we closed off a wide storage area with two pairs of six-panel bifolds.

Custom bathroom vanities. Where a standard vanity won't fit, we build one in place. In a Barrhaven bathroom we replaced a pedestal sink with a stained wood vanity built into the alcove, with panelled doors, a white countertop and an undermount sink. When a vanity needs new plumbing connections, we arrange a qualified, certified plumber as part of the project.

Under-stair storage, desks and nooks. Doors under the stairs, a desk in a corner, a media wall, or shelving in a basement family room.

Cabinet doors. New doors on existing kitchen or storage cabinets. In a Nepean kitchen we built 16 flat-style cabinet doors in white with black bar pulls. See kitchen remodels.

Making awkward spaces useful

The best built-ins usually go where nothing else fits: a sloped ceiling, a shallow alcove, a bulkhead, the triangle under a staircase. Because each piece is made to measure, we can work around baseboard heaters, vents and outlets, scribe the sides to walls that aren't straight, and run shelving right to the ceiling so there's no dust-collecting gap on top. The goal is a unit that looks like it was always part of the house.

For homes and workplaces

Built-ins aren't only for houses. We've built a custom office desk at a client's workplace, and we take on built-in storage, reception counters and shelving for offices, shops and condo units. Most of the carpentry and renovation work we do in homes, we can do in commercial spaces and condos as well.

The design process

  1. Measure and talk. We visit, measure the space and ask how you'll use it: books, toys, linens, a TV, a desk. Photos of designs you like are a great starting point, and we can build from an inspiration picture.
  2. Agree on the layout. You see the layout and dimensions before anything is cut, so there are no surprises.
  3. Materials and finish. We'll walk through material, door style, hardware and finish options with you, and choose what suits the piece and your budget.
  4. Build and install. We build and install the units, using a laser level so long runs stay straight from end to end. Then we add the trim that ties the unit into the wall and ceiling.
  5. Finish. We'll agree on the finish as part of the quote.

Why hire a carpenter for built-ins

At Zanini Renovations, the same company designs, builds and installs your built-in, so nothing gets lost between a designer, a shop and an installer. You deal directly with the owner, Jonas Zanini, from the estimate to the final walkthrough. Fully insured, with a certificate of insurance available on request.

Built-ins and closets FAQ

Do you design the built-in, or do I need drawings?

You don't need drawings. We measure the space, talk through how you'll use it and work from photos of designs you like, then confirm the layout with you before building.

What materials do you use for shelving and cabinet boxes?

It depends on the piece, how it will be used and the finish you want. We'll walk you through the material options when we plan the design.

Can you replace cabinet doors without replacing the cabinets?

Yes, as long as the existing boxes are in good shape. In a Nepean kitchen we built 16 new flat-style doors for the existing cabinets, along with new drawers and soft-close hardware.

Can you build a closet in a basement or unfinished room?

Yes. We can frame and drywall a new closet, add shelving, and hang bifold, barn or double doors, either as part of a basement finish or on its own.

Can you build from a photo I found online?

Yes. An inspiration photo is a great starting point. We'll measure your space and adapt the design so it fits the room and the way you'll use it.
