Fence & Gate Installation in Carleton Place and West Ottawa

Custom wood fence and gates in Carleton Place

A good fence gives you privacy, keeps the dog in the yard and makes the whole property look finished. We build custom wood fences and gates for homes around Carleton Place, Lanark County and Ottawa. Zanini Renovations is a fully insured carpentry business based in Carleton Place since 2020, and owner Jonas Zanini is involved from the first measurement to the last gate hinge.

We work in wood only. We don't install chain-link fencing.

Fence styles we build

Privacy fences. Most of our fence work is solid board privacy fencing in pressure-treated lumber: vertical boards on posts and horizontal backer rails, typically 6 feet high where the local by-law allows. In Carleton Place we fenced in a backyard so the homeowners have a private space around their gazebo where the yard used to open onto a shared lawn.

Lattice tops and privacy screens. A lattice top softens a tall fence and lets some light through. A shorter screen section can hide a patio, a hot tub or the neighbour's window without fencing the whole yard. In Ottawa's Alta Vista area we built a pressure-treated lattice fence for exactly that kind of privacy.

Shared and multi-yard fences. Neighbours often split a new fence along a shared line. In one Carleton Place job we built 6 foot privacy fences for three neighbouring homes at once, so the whole row matches.

Gates. Single walk gates, wide double gates for a trailer or mower, and gates framed into a lattice top. On a Carleton Place side yard we built a single lattice-top gate between the house and the existing fence, and a wide double gate with a header beam across the top on the other side.

Before the first post hole

Property lines. Know where your property line is before the fence is laid out. If there's any doubt, a survey and a conversation with your neighbour now can save a lot of trouble later.

Utility locates. Call before you dig: utility locates are required before any digging, and post holes go deep enough to reach buried lines. In Ontario, locates are requested through Ontario One Call.

By-laws. Fence heights, corner-lot rules and pool enclosure requirements are set by each municipality, whether that's the City of Ottawa, the Town of Carleton Place, Beckwith, Mississippi Mills or Perth. It's worth checking your local by-law before we settle on a design. We don't quote heights here because they vary from town to town.

Posts that stand up to frost

Ottawa Valley winters heave anything that isn't set properly, so the posts are the most important part of a fence. They're set on solid footings designed to resist frost heave, with exterior-grade hardware throughout. We'll talk about post spacing and layout for your yard at the estimate.

Gates that don't sag

A gate is the part of a fence that gets used every day, and it's usually the first thing to fail. We build gate frames square and braced, and hang them on hardware sized for the gate's weight and width, from a single walk gate to a wide double gate.

Staining and maintenance

Pressure-treated wood needs time to dry before it takes a stain well, and how long depends on the lumber and the weather. After that, a stain or sealer every few years keeps it looking good and slows weathering. Ask us when your fence is done and we'll tell you what to look for before staining.

How a fence job works

You send photos or a rough sketch of where the fence should go. We visit to measure, check the grade and gate locations, and talk through height and style. You get a written estimate in Canadian dollars, labour-only or with materials, before any work starts. Then we set the posts, build the panels and gates, and clean up so the yard is left tidy. You'll get a schedule with your quote. Workmanship is covered by our one-year limited warranty.

Fence and gate FAQ

Who is responsible for knowing where my property line is?

It's the homeowner's responsibility. If there's any doubt about where the line is, get it confirmed with a survey and talk to your neighbour before the fence is laid out.

Do you arrange utility locates before digging post holes?

Yes, locates are required before any digging. Call before you dig: in Ontario, utility locates are requested through Ontario One Call, and no post hole goes in until the lines are marked.

How tall can a backyard fence be in my town?

That's set by each municipality's fence by-law, and corner lots and pool enclosures often have their own rules. Check with the City of Ottawa or your town before we finalize the design.

How long should I wait before staining a new pressure-treated fence?

The wood needs to dry out first so the stain can soak in. How long that takes depends on the lumber and the weather, so we'll tell you what to look for once your fence is finished.

Can you build a gate that won't sag over time?

Yes. We build the gate frame square and braced, and hang it on hardware sized for its weight and width, including wide double gates.
