Accent Walls and Wainscoting in Carleton Place and Ottawa

Custom classic fireplace mantel with a tile surround in Perth

A plain painted wall can become the most interesting thing in a room with the right trim work: wainscoting along a dining room, board and batten in an entry, a picture-frame moulding wall in a bedroom or a full fireplace surround in the living room. These are finish carpentry jobs, and they look good only when the layout is planned and the joints are tight. Zanini Renovations has been a fully insured carpentry and renovation business in Carleton Place since 2020.

What we build

Wainscoting. Panels or boards on the lower part of the wall, finished with a cap rail. It protects walls in busy spaces like hallways, stairways and dining rooms, and it adds a traditional look that suits older homes.

Board and batten and picture-frame moulding. Vertical battens over a flat panel, or moulding laid out in boxes, either partway up the wall or floor to ceiling. Spacing is worked out for each wall so the boxes or battens are even from end to end and line up with windows, outlets and corners.

Feature walls. A single wall treated as a focal point, behind a bed, a sofa or a desk, or at the end of a hallway. Slats, panels and trim can all work, and paint colour plays a big part. One client described what we did in their upstairs hallway: "he added frames and lighting combined with dark paint, giving the house a very elegant look."

Fireplace surrounds and mantels. The fireplace wall is often the room's main feature. In Perth we built a multi-layered mantel with decorative corbels, an arched header and dentil crown moulding, with a large-format tile surround and a raised step hearth (see our Custom Classic Fireplace Mantel in Perth). In a Carleton Place living room we built out a drywall surround with a recessed niche, a wood sill and baseboard wrapped all the way around, below a floating mantel shelf (see our Fireplace Surround with Niche in Carleton Place). On a Kanata fireplace we replaced the old grout and refreshed the surround (see our Fireplace renovation in Kanata). Fireplace work is planned around the required clearances from combustible materials and the appliance manufacturer's instructions. Gas work, such as connecting a gas fireplace, isn't included.

Built-in walls. Sometimes a feature wall is also storage. In a Kanata living room we built a full-wall built-in with open shelving, closed cabinets with panelled doors and crown moulding, all in white (see our Built-In Shelving Wall in Kanata), tying in with the white mantel on the next wall (see custom built-ins).

Layout comes first

Walls are rarely perfectly flat or square, and ceilings and floors aren't always level. We measure each wall, plan the spacing on paper, then mark it out with a laser level so the panels, battens and boxes come out even and straight. We find studs or add backing where trim or a mantel needs solid fastening, scribe to uneven walls, and fill and caulk so everything is ready for paint.

Lighting and outlets

Feature walls often include sconces, picture lights, a TV outlet or an outlet in a niche. Any wiring is done by qualified, certified electricians, whom we arrange as part of the project, so you still have one point of contact.

Residential and commercial

Most of our trim work is in homes, but we also do feature walls and finish carpentry in condos and commercial spaces such as offices and shops.

How an accent wall job works

You send photos of the wall and any inspiration pictures. We visit to measure and check the wall. Then you get a written estimate in Canadian dollars, labour-only or with materials, along with a schedule. We build, fill and caulk so the wall is ready for paint, and we'll agree on painting as part of the quote. Workmanship is covered by our one-year limited warranty.

Accent walls FAQ

What's the difference between wainscoting and an accent wall?

Wainscoting usually covers the lower part of a wall with panels or boards and a cap rail. An accent wall is a feature treatment, such as board and batten, picture-frame moulding or slats, that can run floor to ceiling on one wall.

Do you paint the wall after the trim goes up?

We fill and caulk so the wall is ready for paint. We'll agree on painting as part of the quote.

Can you add lighting or a TV outlet to a feature wall?

Yes. The wiring is done by qualified, certified electricians, whom we arrange as part of the project.
